'Tourists to swear on paper not to offer outside food to wild animals'

Tuesday, 09 January 2024 | PNS | DALTONGANJ

Tourists visiting Betla National Park are to swear on a plain paper, content of which will be typed there already, that they 'will not offer any eatable like biscuits, bananas, guavas, mixture etc to any wild life here in the tiger reserve Palamu.'

The swearing note to be signed by the tourist will be in three languages Hindi, Bengali and English and a tourist will have all the freedom to put his her signature in any of the three languages.

The swearing note will have a plain but firm text. It is to be adhered to and not  to disregard it.

It is that no food or food item will be given to wild life by the tourist. The head of the tourist team is to sign this swearing note mentioning his, her cell phone number and state from where they have come over here.

Deputy director north division of the tiger reserve Palamu P K Jena said "We are too vexed with the problem. Tourists in their sheer rapture or ecstasy offer food, fruits and food stuff to wild life specially monkeys and langurs here."

These monkeys are now so obsessed with human food that they just keep waiting for it to come to them from the tourists and tourists too are most obliging little realising that such 'food offers' have made monkeys change their tastes drastically added Jena.

Jena said "No one has any business to ride over others' food habits. So let wildlife have its own food. They have plenty of items for them in the jungles, fresh and full of nature's vigour."

Jena said "We will urge every tourist to sign a written pledge not to give any food, fruit or foodstuff to any wild life. This can be seen as beneficial to wildlife instead of taking it as any infringement of their joy and rapture."

"The PTR has high respect for the sentiments of its tourists. It ensures that tourists enjoy every single moment here but when it comes to wild life, their food habits and behaviour, PTR is equally unambiguous to ensure that wild life remains a wild life in all the sense instead of eating from pouches and packets or trying to drink from bottled water."

Jena said "Let monkeys have their own food. It should not be given junk food. It's the moral responsibility of all of us to see that the food habits of wild life don't change."

Residents of Betla said the monkeys look like 'addicts' outside ready to eat food meant for humans. When they find no such freebies coming to them, they become aggressive. They grind their teeth and make angry sounds. It's very dangerous both ways for the monkeys themselves and the tourists."

"Monkeys behave like drug addicts. Their mood enlivens when they get freebies. They sulk when no outside food is there for them" said the residents.

Sources said the PTR has hit upon a very novel and effective means to dissuade tourists from offering food to the wild life.
